Sensex ends flat amid dull day


After surviving China scare yesterday, the Indian markets ended almost unchanged on Tuesday amid a choppy trading session. The benchmark indices struggled for any specific direction through out the day and were stuck in a narrow trading band.



The Oil & Gas, Auto and the PSU stocks were among the major laggards, on the other hand, FMCG, Pharma and the Telecom stocks were among the gainers. Even the broader indices ended with modest gains.

"Technically, the 50 DMA has yet again turned out to be a stiff resistance for the NSE Nifty. The political stalemate is something that one will have to keep an eye on in view of the upcoming Budget. ", says Amar Ambani, Head of Research (India Private Clients) - IIFL.

The BSE Sensex ended with modest gains, the index gained 24 points to close at 20,005 and the NSE Nifty ended flat at 5,947.

Among the BSE sectoral indices, the BSE FMCG index was the top gainer the index gained 0.7%, followed by BSE Pharma index was up 0.5% and the BSE Teck index gained 0.5%.

The European indices were trading in the green, the DAX in Germany was up 0.4%, the CAC 40 index in France was up 0.7% and FTSE index was trading slightly higher by 0.2%.

HDFC Bank, Tata Power, RCOM, Wipro, ITC, Jindal Steel, Bajaj Auto, M&M, HDFC, TCS, Suzlon, HCL Tech and Sun Pharma were among the gainers in the Sensex and the Nifty.

Tata Motors, ICICI Bank, SBI, RIL, ONGC, HUL, L&T, Reliance Infra, Axis Bank, Ambuja cement and L&T were among the laggards in the Sensex and the Nifty.

The market breadth was neutral on the BSE with 1,433 shares rising and 1,391 shares falling.

Bartronics, United Brew, Hindustan Oil, Moser Baer, Manappuram Gen, Motilal Oswal, United Brew Hldg, KS Oils, JMD Telefilms, Hexaware Tech, Koutons Retl, Tata Elxsi and JM Financial were among the notable gainers in the broader market.

Outside the two main indices, the key losers were Asahi India, Glodyne Tech, Shree Ashtavina, Arshiya Intl, Allcargo Glob, Sunteck Realty, Patni Computer, AIA Engineering, Birla Corp and Karuturi Global.
