Nifty ends at 5201. Sensex below 17,300


It was a positive start as Samvat 2068 began with the Nifty hovering above 5200. Profit booking was seen in the closing half an hour. Investors were probably jittery ahead of the much awaited meeting to resolve Europe’s sovereign debt crisis.

The Nifty opened at 5215 and hit a high of 5219. The low for the special trading session was 5196. The Nifty finally ended just above the 5200 mark.



The Sensex opened at 17336 and hit a high of 17350. The low was 17273. The Sensex ended at 17275.

Asian shares were lower on Wednesday.

Top gainers among the BSE sectoral indices were, BSE Consumer Durables index up 1%, BSE Capital Goods gained 1%, BSE PSU and BSE Pharma index also added 1% each.

Surprisingly the BSE Mid-Cap index surged 1.2% and BSE Small-Cap index gained 1.4% outperforming the benchmark indices.

On the other hand, the BSE IT index was the top loser, the index was down 0.6%, while BSE Teck index was down 0.2%.

Among the 50 stocks of Sensex, Hindalco, SBI, Coal India, Sterlite Industries, Bharti Airtel and L&T were among the major gainers. On the other hand, Wipro, ICICI Bank, Infosys and M&M were among the major losers.

The BSE and NSE will remain closed on Thursday on account of Diwali
