Asian markets edge up amid steady trades

Most indices manage to hold their recent gains; Japanese stocks pare some of the latest gains

Asian markets ended mixed though most of the indices managed to hold their recent gains with Japan being the notable exception. Weak closing on Wall Street in the previous session and rising crude oil prices in the international market amidst geopolitical tensions in Libya impacted market sentiment. Commodities remained strong even as the US dollar came off its five-month lows against the Euro.

Sensex regains 18,000 as heavyweights rise

The key benchmark indices logged decent gains, extending Tuesday's advance, on firm global cues. Index heavyweights -- ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, Infosys Technologies and ITC led the rally. The market sentiment was positive after billionaire investor and international investment icon Warren Buffett on Tuesday, 22 March 2011, said he is looking forward to using the enormous cash pile of flagship firm Berkshire Hathaway to acquire companies in India. The sentiment was also boosted by the government tabling two key reforms bills in parliament on Tuesday, 22 March 2011. The BSE 30-share Sensex was up 217.86 points or 1.21% to 18,206.16, up 255.99 points from the day's low and off 12.12 points from the day's high.

Markets continue strong run; Sensex gains 218 pts

Again it turned out to be a strong day for markets led by sustained buying in heavyweights and sectors

Precious metals manage to eke out gains

Prices fluctuate between red and green for entire day

Precious metal prices rose for fifth straight day on Tuesday, 22 March 2011 at Comex. Prices kept oscillating between red and green for entire day. Prices went up as tensions in Middle East, especially in Libya continued luring investors towards precious metals as an alternate safe mode of investment. Prices also rose due to weak economic data and as the dollar stayed weak before recovering partly later in the day.

Crude rises again

Prices pare early losses as Libyan crisis deteriorates

Oil prices ended shot up once again and ended higher on Tuesday, 22 March 2011 at Nymex. The Middle East and North Africa crisis and Japan's earthquake has pushed up both crude prices in recent times. Traders continued to monitor the developments closely for the entire day.

On Tuesday, crude oil futures for light sweet crude for April delivery closed higher by $1.67 (1.6%) at $104/barrel. During intra day trading, prices fell modestly lower. Last week, prices closed lower by a mere 0.1%.

After three successive days of selling and underperformance, the Indian markets staged a smart comeback on Tuesday amid strong cues from the international equity markets. Wall Street enjoyed a really good trading session last night amid growing optimism about the state of the US economy. European stocks also extended gains overnight and today. Earlier, the Asian markets ended with smart gains. The Nikkei in Tokyo rose by 4.4% after Monday's break.

Watch your steps!

I don't look to jump over 7-foot bars: I look around for 1-foot bars that I can step over. - Warren Buffett.

The Sage of Omaha is in India finally and feels he should have come here earlier. Better late than never as the legendary investor says. He has also confirmed that India fits into his scheme of things as a large investment destination.

With the market in a state of flux one ought to try and take smaller bets and stick to quality to avoid getting caught on the wrong foot. We are staring at a lower opening due to indecisive global cues and trepidation over the ongoing turmoil in the MENA. Japan’s nuclear issues and Europe’s debt troubles are among the other major pressure points that one is grappling with as of now.

Market seen subdued in opening trade

The market is bracing for negative start on a rally in oil prices. Trading of S&P CNX Nifty futures on the Singapore stock exchange indicates a fall of 27.50 points at the opening bell. Billionaire investor Warren Buffett who is in his first visit to India said on Tuesday that he hopes to spend some money in India.
